Just browsing. You’ll have to excuse an ignorant swede living in Nicaragua but I miss MedImmune in your list. Have I missunderstood something?
Jim H said
Christian,
I guess I should have MedImmune on the list, to be consistent. Technically, MedImmune is a Montgomery County company with a Manufacturing facility in Fred. Co., but I have Lonza & Invitrogen on the list and they are not HQ’d in Frederick County either.
I guess I should have said MedImmune is technically now Astra Zeneca, a UK company with Swedish roots. We will have to give them credit for their Frederick County connection. I’ll fix it momentarily.

Jim– this is a good resource. I’m giving a talk next week to some grad students at Hopkins about how to research companies. Mind if I put in a link to your blog?

Hey Josh! Nice to hear from you again. By all means, link away!! Coming up North for BioBeers?

How about adding DynPort Vaccine Company to your list?

Who’s following Life Technologies Corp.’s request for County subsidy to expand operations in Frederick? Can $25,000 REALLY produce 50 jobs? Do they need it? Are they really going to leave Frederick if they don’t get $25,000?
Howard Spiegel said
Anybody stimulated? “are ARRA funds get spent, ANYWHERE ??”
I, for one, have Not seen/nor heard of ANY purchase orders.

Marligen Biosciences, Inc. is gone, sad to say. It is now part of OriGene Technologies.

Yes, I heard that news a couple weeks ago. It is a shame.

Wow, I’m so glad I stumbled upon this site. This is exactly the type of forum I was looking for.
I’m looking for a company to construct a cDNA library. Two of the companies I was looking at were Express Genomics and Marligen Biosciences. Has anyone had any experience with either of these companies? I know Marligen is now a part of Origene. If you had experience with either of these companies, could you send me an e-mail? We’ve had some bad experiences with previous companies and before we shell out lots of $ I’d like to hear about satisfied customers first.
Thanks, all!
Jennifer

Jennifer,
Express Genomics is the outfit you want. Chris Gruber and Mark Smith have been making high quality cDNA libraries for over 25 years. You will NOT go wrong with these guys.

Jim H said
Chat,
DynPort is listed under the “Reasearch institutions and Non-Profits” as this better represent that demographic: http://fredcobio.wordpress.com/fred-co-research-institutions-and-non-profits/
Rick Millward said
Now I found the chat area. I am trying get in touch with Ed Wu, formerly of Synergy America, and I think he works for an SAIC division in Frederick. I lost his email due to a computer issue. He was at the Biobeer event at Imquest. If anyone knows him, please send me his contact info or have him contact me at rick.millward@us.army.mil.
Rick Millward said
I have located him. No need to contact.

Hi Jim. Respectfully requesting that DynPort Vaccine Company LLC be added to the list. We’re located at 64 Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick, MD 21702 – http://www.csc.com/dvc
Thanks!
Jim H said
April,
Sorry, hadn’t seen your comment. DVC is listed under “Fred. Co. Research Institutions and non-Profits.” Although I know that’s not entirely accurate, I list SAIC-Frederick under the same heading as I view you both as “quasi-government” entities.

I am looking for a company in Maryland that specializes in PCD PROGRAMED CELL DESTRUCTION
Jim H said
Luther,
The only one doing that in I am aware of is Vaccinogen http://www.vaccinogeninc.com/ but they don’t use the term “PCD”
Caylee Ortega said
Would be fantastic if you could add EmpiriStat, which is a Clinical Research Organization to your website listing as well.
Jim H said
Dang, I guess I do (even though you are probably straddling the Frederick County line anywhere in Mt Airy. Since when has Mt Airy become the epicenter of Clinical Statistics in the County?

I am looking for a 2011 summer internship in the Mt. Airy / Frederick area.
I am just completing my second year at James Madison University. My first two years I gained research/laboratory experience in Viral Discovery, Viral Genome and Bioinformatics. I recently added Nonprofit Studies as my minor. I am seeking to get more experience in both areas. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Jim H said
Andrew,
There are paid summer internships at Ft Detrick through SAIC-Frederick and NCI http://web.ncifcrf.gov/careers/student_programs/internships/crta.asp
Aside from this, there are two Statistics companies in Mt Airy: BioStat Solutions is the one I am most familiar with. They are going to be looking for course work in Stats (which I assume may have been a part of your Bioinformatics classes). Tell Ron I sent you.
Andew Montogmery said
Great – thank you! I will check them out and will let you know how it works out. Andy

Thanks for this list! I knew there were many biotech companies in the Frederick area, but never knew there were this many. I am about to start school in June working toward a biotech certificate and this will help me in my job search once I start looking.

Should Booz Allen Hamilton be on the list of Frederick biotech companies? It has an office on Westview drive.
Jim Hardy said
Doc, since when is a Law Firm a Biotech company? Tell you what, I’ll put Booze Allen on the list when they sponsor a BioBeers event.
Doc Templeton said
Sounds like you need to read about Booz Allen, Jim. We are not a law firm, but a world-wide Federal and civil contracting firm, including biotech. I myself am a DVM, PhD who spent my 36-year miliutary career in biotechnology research. Go to http://www.bah.com.
And we sponsor all sorts of things around Frederick including events for the Ft. Detrick Alliance, the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, and others.
Jim H said
Doc,
Wow, I missed the boat on that one. My apologies. So funny how thinly veiled people behind the barbed wire of Ft Detrick are. We need to fix that problem. I’m in the Ft Detrick Alliance and am the “unofficial” Biotechnology Ambassador of the Fred Co Chamber (until I had to take leave to work a contract in Cleveland where I am now) and have never heard of you. That said, I think your name still sounds like the name of a Law Firm
Gregory Buzard said
Hopefully Booz Allen will sponsor one of the next Biobeers!
Jim do you have an e-mail other than this? I wanted to send you an info flyer for a free forum on biostabilizers we are having at Ft Detrick March 29. -Buz
